Global standards for data capture

During data capture, the GS1 identification number and other information are mapped into data carriers. The GS1 system uses standardised data carriers and defined data identifiers.

In data carriers, the GS1 identification numbers, best-before date, batch or serial numbers can be mapped in machine-readable form.

GS1 data carriers include the EAN/UPC barcode, GS1-128 barcode, GS1 DataBar, and GS1 DataMatrix. Radio frequency technology (RFID) complements the GS1 barcode.

By means of the data identifier (Application Identifier), a variety of additional information can be mapped in a structured way. In addition to the unique Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), the batch number and the best-before date can also be encoded.
